Description

The tunnel under Hampton Court Road, located near its junction with Hogarth Way, dates from the mid to late 18th century and is possibly designed by Capability Brown. It was likely constructed to create a direct route from Garrick's Villa to Garrick's Shakespeare Temple. The tunnel features battered sides made of flint nodules and has a segmental arched vault lined with slag. The southern end of the tunnel is designed to resemble the entrance of a picturesque grotto.
