Description

The Methodist Church, built in 1914 by Withers and Meredith, is designed in a Byzantine style. It features red brick with stone and tile dressings and has tiled roofs. The church is laid out in a Greek cross plan and has paired entrances beneath dressed stone lunettes, each containing a sunk marble rondel, with semicircular arches supported by Byzantine style columns. The entrances have panelled doors, and above them are herringbone tilework panels beneath moulded stone coping.

Set back from the entrances is a Diocletian window beneath a wide stone hood, which has eight lights divided by strong vertical mullions and features coloured glass. The gable is decorated with herringbone brick alternating with vertical stone strips and is flanked by square brick turrets that have recessed stone dressed niches. There are flush stone bands and moulded stone coping, with a central recessed niche in the gable styled similarly.

At the outer angles, there are polygonal stair turrets topped with domed roofs, featuring alternating long and short two-light windows with small leaded panes beneath semicircular heads, and herringbone tiles above. The stone cills and bands are consistent throughout. The east and west faces of the church are similar in design. The octagonal roof rises to an octagonal timber lantern, which is topped by a dome.

Inside, there is a five-sided gallery with a panelled balustrade, and the ribbed roof rises to an octagonal feature. The original seating is still present, and the organ is located at the rear of the choir loft. Stone stairs in the turrets lead up to the gallery. The attached buildings are not of special interest.
