Description

37-41 High Street is a building dating from the 16th century, originally consisting of two timber-framed houses. The left-hand house now includes No 37 and one bay of No 39, while the right-hand house includes No 41 and two bays of No 39. No 37/39 is two storeys high, with the upper floor jettied on the street side and at the north end. The ground floor features a modern shop and a carriageway to the right. The first floor has three sash windows with glazing bars. The upper floor and the north gable end are covered in stucco. The roof is tiled and constructed with tie-beam, queen-strut, and collar techniques. At the back of No 37, facing East Lane, there is a two-storeyed timber-framed extension with a jettied upper floor and a pantiled roof.

No 39/41 is also two storeys tall, with the upper floor jettied at the street front. The ground floor consists of modern shops, and there are four windows on each floor. No 39 is stuccoed, while No 41 is weather-boarded. The roof is tiled, hipped at each end with gablets. No 41 extends back three bays from the street, with a fourth modern bay at the east end. The main storeys of No 41 have undergone significant alterations, but the roof remains intact, featuring king and queen strut construction. There may have originally been a smoke bay. No 41, likely originally the service wing, has a separately roofed structure with tie-beam, crown-post, collar-plate, and collar construction.
