Description

The house at 4 Oaklea Passage dates to circa 1820. It is constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with some parts painted. The roof is covered in Welsh slate, featuring later decorative ridge tiles. The building follows a central entrance hall plan, with two rooms extending to the rear. It is two storeys high and comprises three bays.

The south-facing (garden) elevation has a central entrance door with a bracketed hood. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, with a replacement two-pane sash on the ground floor to the right and a blind window above the door, containing a small casement window. All windows are set within gauged flat brick arches. Chimneys with projecting stacks are located at each end of the ridge. The rear elevation features a central plank door with a bracketed hood. Two-light metal casement windows are present, including some with original catches, and displaying saddle bars.

Inside, the original four-panel, two-panel, and board doors remain. The front rooms on each floor retain original plain fireplaces and bracketed mantelshelves; the first-floor fireplaces have iron grates. A further fireplace is located in the rear kitchen. Original wall cupboards and peg rails are also present, along with some wainscotting and dado rails. A straight-flight close-string staircase features a columnar newel, stick balusters, and a matching balustrade to the landing. The rear windows have chamfered wood mullions. The house retains a remarkably complete range of both external and internal features.
