Description
The Lodge is a former lodge house, dating to 1893 and designed by W.B. Catherwood. It was originally built to serve Spring Grove House, the residence of soap magnate Andrew Pears, in conjunction with the extensive works undertaken to the main house between 1892 and 1894. The lodge is constructed of red brick with extensive stone dressings, a wooden porch, and a slate roof with decorative leadwork.
The lodge is single-storey with a square plan and a pyramidal roof rising to a large central chimneystack, which features three small pilasters on each face. The base of the stack has scalloped leadwork, and the top of the roof is decorated with ornamental sun ray leadwork. A dentil cornice runs along the eaves, and a moulded string course is located at cill level. The entrance is via a wooden porch with arches over a balustrade. The casement windows are set within moulded stone surrounds, featuring decorative leadwork to the upper lights, central mullions, cast iron balcony rails, and aprons.
A projecting gable on the south-east corner is topped with an iron floral finial. The tympanum of the gable displays a stone relief with strapwork around a cartouche inscribed "AP 1893," referring to Andrew Pears. A pair of windows on the main side have moulded stone aprons embellished with swags and paterae. The east facade has a pair of windows with later added shutters. The northern continuation of the lodge formerly housed a WC and a coal store.
The building is a highly ornamental example of 'Free Renaissance' style. Drainage plans dated August 1893 were submitted to the local authority. A historical account of Spring Grove House, authored by Peter Rowlands in 2001, expands on the building’s context.
