Description

The Parsonage is a house that was formerly a vicarage, built in 1856 for John Farnell, likely designed by John Deason. It features coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof, complete with stone-coped gables and kneelers, as well as ornamental stacks. The building is in the Tudor style and consists of a main block with a service wing at the rear.

It has two storeys and a triple gable front, with the left gable set back. The first floor has a three-window range, including a three-light window to the left, a single-light window in the center, and a two-light window to the right. On the ground floor, there is a four-light window to the left, a central plank door set within a moulded pointed-arch doorway, a two-light mullion and transom window to the right, and a square bay with a stone roof canted at the right corner. The left end features a projecting stack with a gable behind it and additional stone mullion windows, as well as on the service wing. The right side has a gable with a two-light mullion and transom window and another two-light window above, along with a projecting stack that has a tablet carved with a coat of arms. There are further mullion windows, a door, and a flat-roofed extension at the rear.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to retain many original features. This well-designed and little-altered former vicarage is part of a significant group with the Church of St. John the Baptist, St. John's Lodge, St. John's Cottage, and Farnell's Almshouses, all likely designed by John Deason for local brewer John Farnell.
