Description
Farnell's Almshouses are a group of almshouses built in 1857, likely designed by John Deason for John Farnell. The buildings are constructed from squared and coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and feature a gabled slate roof with ashlar ridge stacks that have moulded cornicing. The almshouses form three sides of a quadrangle, with a wall and gateway on the east side that encloses the north-east corner. They are single-storey structures. Each cottage has doorways with stop-chamfered architraves, which are either square-headed or segmental-arched, and there are three-light windows with chamfered stone mullions and square heads. Additional features include a low wall topped with iron railings and a stone-coped gabled gateway that has a hoodmould over a chamfered pointed-arched entrance. There is also a memorial to John Farnell, dating from around 1857, which consists of a bust of Farnell set on a stone plinth within a timber-framed canopy that is arch-braced to the wallplate and topped with a pyramidal slate roof. The Farnell Almshouses and the school were established under the patronage of John Farnell.
