Description
Heston War Memorial, designed by sculptor Arthur G. Walker in 1918, is made of Portland stone. It features a statue of a private soldier in full marching kit, standing at ease, atop a square pedestal that rests on a three-stage stepped base. The base displays lists of names of the fallen and reliefs depicting naval activity on each side. The memorial is surrounded by matching posts and chains. The front inscription begins with "IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." A later addition to the base reads, "REMEMBER ALSO THE MEN AND WOMEN OF HESTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945." This memorial was a gift from Sir Frederick and Lady Becker and was unveiled on June 1st, 1918, several months before the Armistice. Originally, it stood on a shallow earthen mound, but the current stepped base was created after 1945.
