Description
The Former Norwood Free School is a building constructed in 1767, as indicated by the inscription "A Free School erected by E B 1767" on stone plaques above the door at the first storey. The building has two storeys and is arranged in three bays, featuring a central entrance door. It is made of brown brick and has a tile roof. The ground storey has casement windows with semi-circular heads, while the first storey features casement windows with segmental heads. The doorway has a semi-circular head, complete with a fanlight and keystone. To the right, there is a one-bay wing with a lean-to roof. Inside, the ground floor includes a fireplace with a brick chimney breast, which has a plastered upper section painted with a scene that may depict the Three Ages of Man. This painting shows a boy holding the hand of a young man in clerical-type dress, with an old man seated between Gothic piers. This decorative painting is considered rare, possibly unique, for a schoolroom overmantel. As a result, the building has been upgraded to grade II*.
