Description
This listing describes a group of five chest tombs and a headstone located in a railed enclosure approximately 10 metres west of the north aisle of the Church of St Nicholas. The tombs date from the mid 18th century to the early 19th century and are made of limestone. Three of the chest tombs are from the mid 18th century and feature a moulded plinth and cornice, along with wide corner balusters that flank a central inscription panel. The central tomb in the group commemorates Charles Holland, an actor who died in 1830, and includes a moulded plinth and cornice, fluted corner pilasters, and a shaped top. To the west of the group is the headstone of William Street, a butcher who died in 1732, which features a cherub's head set in a shaped pediment with scrolled sides. There is also a brick chest tomb to the east of the group, but it is not considered to have special architectural or historic interest.
