Description
The boundary wall at Gunnersbury Park is a Grade II listed structure built between 1658 and 1663 by John Webb for Sir John Maynard. It forms the eastern and part of the southern boundary of the park surrounding Gunnersbury House. The wall runs north-south from the east gateway and returns west at the southern end for 22 meters. It is constructed of red brick laid in English bond.
On the exterior, the east side of the north-south section features a flat plinth course that rises in height as the ground level drops to the south. The top of the wall has flat coping bricks laid on edge. There are seven late 17th-century raking buttresses spaced at intervals along this side. At the northern end, the wall meets the east gateway into the park. The west side shows a butt joint that indicates a former doorway, which was removed in the late 17th century.
The east-west return begins at a rebuilt corner and is constructed similarly, with areas of whitewashed plaster suggesting that former garden buildings once abutted the wall. Additionally, there is a 2-light window frame that was inserted in the 18th century. The wall holds group value with other listed buildings within the park, especially the east gateway.
