Description
The Gothic outbuildings east of Gunnersbury House, including the arcade grotto shelter and a room known as Princess Amelia's Bath House, date from the late 18th century or early 19th century. They are constructed of stucco or brick and feature castellated designs with pinnacles and buttresses. The upper terrace has an arcade of four Tudor arches, which are adorned with wooden grilles and a wrought iron gate. There are pierced parapets on both the upper and lower terraces, along with retaining walls. The south-west grotto has imitation rock surfaces, while the south-east room features a canted bay. A semi-octagonal shelter on the south side includes a central doorway and side windows, all with four-centred arches, and the roofs are flat. The buildings were damaged in a fire during the war. Princess Amelia, a friend of Horace Walpole of Strawberry Hill fame, may have been influenced by him in the design of these structures.
