Description
The West Stables in Gunnersbury Park are stables built in the early 19th century and remodeled in 1836 by Sydney Smirke for Nathan Rothschild. The remains of a Gothic-style addition at the rear were constructed between 1837 and 1840 by William Fuller Pocock for Thomas Farmer of Gunnersbury House. The building features stucco over brick with hipped slate roofs and stuccoed brick ridge stacks. It has an L-plan layout with a front-left wing and is designed in the Italianate style. The stables are two storeys high, with an eight-window range on the front and a two-window range on the left wing. A rusticated bay is located to the left of the center, featuring a round window above a semi-circular arched doorway, which is topped by a pedimented bell-tower. The first floor has square-headed two-light windows above a semi-circular arched doorway, with lunettes to the left and garage or coach house doors to the right. The rusticated end bay on the right has a blind oval window above a semi-circular arched doorway, and there is a canted bay on the right gable end. There are no notable interior features. The subsidiary Gothic-style rear elevation has buttressed bays, each with a group of three blind lancets above a blind pointed arch, designed as a Gothic folly to obscure the view of the stables from Gunnersbury House.
