Description

A group of nine chest tombs made of limestone, located approximately 10 to 18 metres south of the east end of the south aisle of the Church of St Nicholas. These tombs date from the early 18th century to the mid-19th century and are described from east to west.

The first is a memorial to two daughters of Governor Van Teylingen, who died in 1769, featuring a moulded plinth and cornice, fluted corner pilasters, and a bolection-moulded inscription panel. Next is a memorial to Thomas Cary, who also died in 1769, which includes a moulded plinth and cornice, a fielded inscription panel, and wide corner balusters adorned with acanthus-leaf carvings.

To the northwest of the Cary memorial is an unidentified memorial from the mid-18th century, characterized by a moulded plinth and cornice, fielded inscription panels, and wide corner balusters. Another memorial belongs to Thomas Snooke, who died in 1723; it is made of brick with recessed panels and a cyma-moulded lip to the stone top.

The memorial for Alexander Brodle, who died in 1811, features panelled pilasters flanking recessed panels, a moulded cornice, and a shaped top. Joseph Constantine, a surgeon who died in 1846, is commemorated with a moulded plinth and cornice, a raised inscription panel, and a hipped top with antefixae. Lastly, there is a plain memorial for William Yates, who died in 1758, which includes a moulded plinth and cornice with a slate top.
