Description
The Hogarth Memorial is a chest tomb located approximately 8 metres south of the south aisle of the Church of St Nicholas. It commemorates the artist William Hogarth, who died in 1764, and was restored in 1856. The memorial is made of limestone and features a pedestal with a moulded entablature and corner brackets. The inscription panels include an epitaph by Daniel Garrick. Atop the memorial is a flaming urn that is intricately carved with festoons, set on a plinth adorned with carvings of a palette and brushes, a book and mask, and blank heraldic shields with palm fronds on the side panels. The memorial is enclosed by a wrought-iron railing that includes urns.
