Description
Mill Bridge and Basin is a bridge and associated basin built around 1820, with the designer unknown. The bridge is made of sandstone and features a parapet and kerb, while the basin has a brick surround and cast iron railings. The low single-span bridge has radiating voussoirs and channelled rustication on the spandrels. It has a stone parapet on the east side and railings on the west. The basin to the west is enclosed by cast iron railings from two phases, set into a York stone kerb, with a brick and cement-lined facing below. On the north side of the basin, there are a pair of arches divided by a cut-water; the taller arch to the north has a keystone, while the lower brick arch is only visible at low water.
Both the bridge and basin are part of the Isleworth Mill River, also known as the Duke of Northumberland's River, which is a 16th-century mill stream. A mill once stood on the west side of the basin over the arches. This bridge was constructed at the expense of the Duke of Northumberland in 1820. It is a fine example of Neoclassical masonry and, along with the basin, represents a significant remnant of Isleworth's industrial history.
