Description
Bell Road Methodist Church is a Methodist church dated 1879, likely designed by architect James Wear. It is constructed of brownish brick in English bond, with a stuccoed front and a Welsh slate roof. The building is two storeys high and features a symmetrical elevation with three by five bays and a rear vestry range. The façade includes a plinth, moulded cornices, and strings, with bays defined by giant rusticated pilasters that are taller in the center. These pilasters support a modillioned, corniced pediment that features a keyed oculus in the tympanum.
There are steps leading up to a central double board door, which is situated below a semi-elliptical fanlight within a porch. This porch has paired columns that support a pedimented entablature, which displays the date in the tympanum. The church has round-arched windows with glazing bars, and the larger central window on the first floor features wooden tracery and archivolts, as do the ground-floor openings. The returns of the building also have round-arched windows with tile sills and glazing bars, and there is a stack at the rear right corner. The rear vestry range includes a four-panel door in a round-arched surround, a four-pane sash window, and an end stack on the left return.
Inside, the church retains its original fittings, including pews, a preaching pulpit, and an organ loft with a decorative panelled and open-traceried front, flanked by clustered pilasters with decorative capitals. The gallery wraps around three sides, supported by circular columns with plain capitals, and features a panelled front with an upper section of interlinked circles. The ceiling is compartmented, with panels and a taller central section that has ribbed coving. The entrance vestibule has a tiled floor, a foundation stone, and gallery stairs on each side. The interior is of good quality and has seen little alteration. The church halls attached to the rear are not included in this listing.
