Description
The gates to Syon Lodge are located at a late 18th-century house in the grounds of Syon Lodge in Isleworth. The building is constructed of brown brick and features two storeys and a basement, with five double-hung sash windows. The door, window surrounds, and plaques are reportedly from Foley House in Langtham Place.
Access to the semi-circular arched doorway is via 11 stone steps and a wrought iron railing. The doorway is adorned with a fine wood surround, Roman Doric pilasters, and an entablature that includes an acanthus leaf frieze, a modillion cornice, and a central high relief carving of an eagle with spread wings. There are panels on either side of the door that feature consoles supporting an archivolt and varved keystones, along with a fanlight and a six-fielded panel door.
The ground floor windows have wood surrounds with carved consoles that support an entablature, and a reeded frieze with carved ram's heads at each end above the consoles. The first-floor windows are framed with wood architraves and feature carved keystones depicting ram's heads and swags. The second-floor windows have architraves and flat arches. There are two circular carved plaques at the first-floor level and four oval carved plaques at the second-floor level. The parapet is topped with four stone vases.
The gates themselves are finely wrought iron, set between brick piers that are also surmounted by stone vases. There are two additional sets of entrance piers with vases. Inside, the ground and first-floor rooms contain very fine imported panelling and mantelpieces from various periods, although the permanence of these additions is uncertain as the owner specializes in the sale of "period rooms" and antique garden ornaments.
The former stable block to the left has Tudor archways and windows added to a primarily Georgian design due to the owner's modifications. The house was once inhabited by the novelist Manville Fenn.
