Description
High Grove House, built in 1881 by E S Prior for Sir Hugh and Lady Juliana Hume-Campbell, is located on the south side of High Road in Eastcote. It was constructed to replace an earlier house that was destroyed by fire. This building is an early example of the Queen Anne - Early Georgian revival style. A drawing of the house was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1882.
The house is two storeys with an attic and has an L-shaped layout, featuring southern service extensions and a two-storey projecting diagonal porch at the angle. This design hints at Prior's later development of the "butterfly" plan, which is also suggested by the one-storey and attic end wings. The exterior is made of high-quality red brick, featuring gauged brick window arches, some of which are rusticated into voussoirs. The windows are framed in a short classical order, with small shaped gables above in the Carolean style. The high-pitched hipped roofs are swept and tiled, adorned with tall gabled dormers. The eaves cornice is decorated with modillions, which are set diagonally in the porch bay. The garden front has three sets of three windows, with half-octagonal outer bays. Inside, there are later 18th-century style plastered rooms.
