Description
Moorcroft is a large, rambling mansion now serving as an old people's home and special school. The original part of the house is a three-storey, seven-bay building from the early 18th century, constructed of brick that has been painted. It features brick bands at the first and second floors, along with a stone frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The upper floor may have been added later. The building has sash windows with glazing bars set in box frames, with those on the first and second floors positioned under shallow segmental brick arches. There is a modern central door flanked by half-columns, although the entablature is missing.
To the west, there is a three-storey, four-bay wing from the early to mid-19th century, also made of painted brick and topped with a hipped slate roof. This wing has sash windows with glazing bars and segmental brick arches. Additional large extensions on the west front consist of five sections at different planes, totaling twelve windows. The second and fourth sections have parapets, with the fourth section being only two storeys high. A Doric porch is located in the second section. There is a similar wing on the east side of the original block, and to the southeast, a two-storey Victorian wing covered in stucco has six irregular bays and a hipped slate roof.
Moorcroft, along with the wall to the south, the house to the northeast, the stable and coachhouse to the north, and Vine Cottage, forms a cohesive group.
