Description
The Market House, built in 1788, is a two-storey structure with an eleven-window front and an additional blank-panelled half storey added to the three central bays. These bays are topped with a pediment featuring a bell-cupola and a round window. The building is constructed of light red brick, with parapets on the sides and stone cornices on the central section and pediment. The original windows have been replaced with casements that feature gauged brick arches. The central first-floor windows are round-headed and have been enlarged to fill the recess spaces, with narrower balustrades below them. The ground floor is adorned with a Doric colonnade, which has been filled with modern glazing. Inside, there is a Doric screen separating two ranges of stalls and a mock 17th-century staircase.
