Description
Upminster Court is a substantial country house built in 1905 by Professor Charles Reilly, designed in the Wren revival style. The house is constructed of red brick and Bath stone, topped with Westmoreland slate roofs. It has two storeys and attics. The entrance front features a central section of six bays, with two sets of two and two sashes above a single-storey colonnade that connects the projecting wings. Each wing consists of three bays, adorned with giant Ionic corner pilasters and tall pediments that have central occuli.
The garden front displays a layout of four-three-four bays, highlighted by giant Ionic pilasters. The projecting center is topped with a tall pediment and occulus, flanked by small columned porches with slate pent roofs. The house is characterized by prominent chimney stacks and a paved terrace with a stone balustrade and steps. The narrow south front includes a two-storey canted bay with a ramped parapet and a pediment above. All facades feature small-paned sash windows and a bold modillion cornice. There is also a service wing attached to the north front of the house.
