Description
The Clock House, built around 1775, is a two-storey red brick building located on St Mary's Lane in Upminster. The front facing the road features five windows. The ground floor has been altered with a later porch, while the upper floor contains four blind windows and one sash window, with a cill-course and raised band-course separating the storeys, topped by a cornice and parapet. At the center of the parapet is a small rectangular turret that holds a circular black clock face with gilt figures, signed and dated 'Edward Tutet. London. 1774.' Above the turret is an octagonal open pillared cupola with an ogee dome. It is likely that the turret predates the stables and was brought from Woolwich Arsenal; a weather vane dated 1700 is stored inside the building. The east side of the Clock House features two projecting two-storey wings with an asymmetrical arrangement of windows in a 1-3-1 pattern. The west side has a pedimented center with a similar 1-3-1 window arrangement. This building was formerly the stable block for New Place, the residence of the Esdaile family, which has since been demolished.
