Description
The Upminster War Memorial is located in a paved area next to Corbets Tey Road, at the eastern end of the churchyard of the Church of St Laurence, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial features a Celtic cross made of Portland stone, which stands on a tapering square plinth that is raised on a three-stepped base made of York stone. The front of the cross is adorned with detailed interlace carvings, while the back displays a reversed sword carved in low relief.
The plinth has dark stone plaques on its faces. The main dedicatory inscription on the front reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE PEOPLE OF UPMINSTER WHO FELL IN THE TWO WORLD WARS 1914 – 1918 1939 – 1945 AND SUBSEQUENT CONFLICTS THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY (1ST SAMUEL. XXV.16)."
The plaque on the north face lists names from World War II, while the west face includes names of merchant seamen and civilians. The south-facing plaque commemorates those who fell in World War I. Additionally, the front face of the bottom step of the base is inscribed with "SACRED ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1939 – 1945 AND SUBSEQUENTLY."
