Description
A pair of early 19th century houses, located at 72 and 74 Blackheath Road. No. 72 is three storeys high and has three windows. It is constructed of multicoloured stock brick with a stucco frieze, cornice, and parapet. The windows have gauged, flat brick arches, although the right-hand window on the first and second floors has been blocked. A shop window of mid-to-late 19th century date is at ground floor level, featuring a modified dentil cornice resembling machicolation and an ornamental cast iron grille below the fascia. The windows have been altered to use plate glass but retain their original frames and panelled stallrisers below. The parapet is decorated with effigies of two greyhounds in a recumbent position and three lion masks are placed at second floor level. No. 74 is also three storeys high, with a basement, and has three windows. It is built of multicoloured stock brick and has a parapet concealing the roof. Sash windows with glazing bars are set within stucco-lined reveals, and have gauged, flat brick arches. A round-headed door opening is within a round-arched recess with stuccoed impost blocks. The door itself consists of six beaded panels, a cornice head that is continuous with the impost blocks, and a plain fanlight within a stucco lined reveal. The building is in excellent condition, save for the loss of part of the wrought iron area railing. The two buildings share group value.
