Description
West Greenwich Secondary School was built in 1874 by E R Robson and J J Stevenson. Originally a three-storey structure, it appears to have a very tall half-attic level, and was initially six bays wide, with the third bay from the left being noticeably narrower than the others. The high-pitched tiled roof features three steep gable ends, each with two tall windows. A small window is located between each pair of tall windows, and at the right-hand end. The building's walls are constructed of multicoloured stock brick, with red brick used for decorative elements. A terra-cotta plaque featuring swags and the inscription "SBL" is positioned on the left side of the second floor. On the first floor, there are 11 windows, with the first and sixth being blank. These windows have moulded brick architraves, a frieze, and segmental pediments. A flat pilaster sits between each window, supporting a cornice. The ground floor windows are paired and feature Dutch gabled crestings over, set within round arched recesses; the third window from the left is single. A late 19th-century, three-bay extension runs under the gable on the right side. A three-storey and basement modern extension sits at the left. The school forms a group with Nos 56 to 62 (even) Union Place.
