Description

This is a terrace of houses located on Hyde Vale, dating from the second quarter of the 19th century. The terrace comprises numbers 45 to 63 (odd), and is part of a group with numbers 37 to 43 (odd). Each house is four storeys high and has two windows. The houses are built of yellow stock brick with a stucco frieze, cornice, and blocking course which originally concealed the roof. Cornices have been removed from numbers 45 to 55. A stucco band runs along the second floor window cills. The ground floor is built with banded rusticated stucco, incorporating a blocking course that serves as the cill band for the first-floor windows. The recessed sash windows on the three upper floors have glazed bars and are set within stucco reveals, with flat brick arches above them. The ground floor openings are round-arched, framed by moulded architraves, keystones, and impost blocks. Steps of varying numbers lead to the doors – a consequence of the terrace’s position on sloping ground. The doors themselves are of four or six panels, topped with cornice heads and semicircular fanlights. Number 49 features cast iron balconies to the first-floor windows.
