Description

East Greenwich Library is a public library built in 1905 as a Carnegie Library designed by Sydney R J Smith in Neo-Classical style. It was constructed for the Carnegie Trust and features red brick with Portland stone dressings and a slate roof with two end chimneystacks. The building has an asymmetrical design, with a central block that is two storeys high and has seven windows. The central section projects and includes three windows, a ramped parapet, a central open pediment, and pilasters made of alternating brick and stone.

The central round-headed window has a keystone and a 12-pane sash, along with a bronze plaque that reads "Greenwich Central Public Library." The ground floor features a Venetian window and another bronze plaque inscribed with "The Gift of Andrew Carnegie." The first-floor flanking windows are circular and also have keystones. The left side has a plain doorcase with a rectangular fanlight and keystone, while the right side boasts an elaborate doorcase with a curved stone hood supported by brackets shaped like putti, along with an eared architrave featuring a putto at the keystone and a carved wreath behind it.

The wings of the building have two strap windows and further extensions of one storey to the ground floor, with all ground floor windows having aprons beneath. The corners are curved. The rear elevation is one storey high and includes, on the left, two sash windows with pilasters, followed by a central section of seven bays with cambered casements and two rooflights, and a right-side four-bay wing with pilasters and an oculus above the doorcase.

Inside, the library retains original doors with brass handles throughout. The large library area has a late 20th-century suspended ceiling supported by original Tuscan columns. The children's library showcases the original roof structure, which is of the arched trace type with urn struts and a boarded roof. There is also an original fireplace, including a cast iron fireplace that has been painted over with Art Nouveau motifs.
