Description

Southgate House, now part of Minchenden Secondary School, dates from the late 18th century, with an early 19th-century extension to the entrance front. The entrance front is two storeys and an attic, with three bays, and the extension has a similar style with a single bay. It has a hipped, slated roof with three dormers and is constructed of stock brick with a parapet above a stuccoed cornice. The sides slightly project. Replacement sash windows are present, featuring glazing bars on the first floor. The central bay features a group of three windows above a projecting segmental stone porch with a wrought iron balcony. The porch is accessed by a segmental flight of six steps with side walls containing lamp holders. The garden front is two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with three and one bays wide. A full-height round bow incorporating three sash windows with glazing bars on each floor is featured in the second bay from the left. The first and third bays contain stone-framed Venetian windows set within round arched recesses. A stone area wall is present with iron railings at intervals. Inside, there is an elliptical entrance hall and a stairwell, one end of which is rounded with niches.
