Description

North Lodge is a house with origins in the late 18th century, although with earlier foundations; it has undergone alterations and additions in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The front elevation is rendered with a pebbledash finish, while the rear is constructed of plum-coloured brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The roof is covered with Welsh slate and features rendered and brick stacks.

The original section of the house is two storeys with a basement and attic, spanning five bays. To the right is an early 20th-century addition, two storeys and basement, of two bays, and to the left, an added wing of two and three storeys. The original section features a plinth, giant pilasters at the ends, a plat band, and an entablature with a frieze and dentilled cornice. A central three-bay break is marked by a corniced pediment containing an oculus in the tympanum, flanked by a balustraded parapet. A central, pedimented Tuscan porch, reached by two steps, shelters a door of six raised and fielded panels above a fanlight with delicate decorative glazing bars within a tall round-arched surround. The windows on the original section are unhorned 12-pane sashes in reveals, with shorter windows on the first floor. The roof is hipped with attic dormers and end stacks. The early 20th-century addition to the right incorporates an ashlar bay window with Ionic columns, a cornice, and a blocking course, featuring 12-pane sashes and triple glazing. The 20th-century addition on the left has a canted ashlar porch, with the first floor above it projecting slightly and having a balustrade.

The rear elevation primarily has windows with flat yellow-brick arches. The original section includes segmental-headed basement windows and tall 15-pane sashes on the ground floor; bays two and three are covered by a raised wooden bay on timber posts, featuring a 15-pane sash flanked by 8-pane sashes, an egg and dart cornice, and a parapet with turned balusters. The first floor has 12-pane sashes. An ashlar eaves band and cornice are complemented by a later stone (or cement) parapet, and three attic dormers are visible. Slightly recessed, hipped-roofed side wings extend to the right and left, with two bays on the right and four bays on the left.

Internally, original features include panelled window shutters, moulded cornices, and a closed-string dog-leg staircase with stick balusters, columnar newels, and a ramped moulded handrail. A unique fireplace to the right of the entrance has a brown Delf-tile surround, a moulded triangular-headed wooden architrave with a pedimented mantel, and affixed floral and leafy motifs. C19 panelled doors, panelling, cornices, and a main open-well stone stair with decorative scroll and foliage work to balusters are also present. The early 20th-century addition to the right features panelled walls and doors, a decorative fireplace, and an integral buffet with fluted columns to over-cupboards. On the first floor of that addition is an Adam-style fireplace with an elaborate three-mirrored over-mantel. It is believed that a lodge was built on this site around 1723 for the deputy ranger.
