Description
The Hermitage is a late 17th century or early 18th century house that stands two storeys tall with an attic and features six windows. It has a high-pitched hipped tiled roof with three dormers and a wood modillion eaves cornice. The exterior is made of dark red brick, accented by a first-floor band and gauged brick arches over sash windows that have glazing bars in exposed moulded frames, along with later blind cases. The near-central doorcase is adorned with rusticated pilasters, an entablature, and a dentilled cornice hood that is broken back in the center. The date 1704 is inscribed on the north end of the building. Inside, the front rooms retain original panelling with a dado rail, and there is a staircase featuring thick turned balusters and a closed string. The back rooms are finished with 17th-century square panelling. At the back left, there is a timber-framed weatherboarded stable building that also has two storeys and an attic, with two windows and a steep tiled roof. The stable features pointed windows above and stable doors below. The Hermitage, along with the stable building and the forecourt walls, forms a group with nos. 70 to 76 (even).
