Description

This First World War memorial, dating from circa 1920, incorporates later additions commemorating the Second World War. Constructed from Portland stone, the memorial stands on the roadside front of St Luke's Church on Bromley Common. It consists of a stylised wheel-head cross set atop a rectangular shaft, which supports a crucifix bearing a bronze figure of Christ. A small bronze plaque displaying the letters INRI in relief is positioned above the crucifix. The entire structure rises from a three-tiered plinth, all elements carved in relief against a rectangular pillar. The cross is placed upon a stepped, square base. Incised lettering on the lower plinth reads: 1914 – 1919./ MIGHTY BY/ SACRIFICE. The step of the base bears the inscription 1939 – 1945.
