Description
Dower House, built circa 1820, was constructed for Thorns Coventry and is now part of Goldsmiths’ College, London University. The house is arranged in an L-shape, with the entrance block situated in the re-entrant angle. It is a two-storey building with a high casement and is built of yellow brick. The building has deep eaves supported by paired wooden brackets, and a hipped, low-pitched slate roof with flat sections. The front elevation is irregularly fenestrated, featuring straight-headed and cambered sash windows. The garden front has a single window. The entrance features a three-window stuccoed canted bay with a window above, all with sash windows incorporating glazing bars and skewback heads, along with blind boxes. The surrounding grounds, originally laid out as a botanic garden, include remnants of brick walls and gateways, which are not considered of particular interest.
