Description
The Parish Church of St James, located on North Cray Road, was rebuilt by architect Edwin Nash between 1850 and 1852, with the chancel added in 1871 and a north-west tower featuring a shingled broach spire completed in 1857. The church is constructed of ragstone and includes a wooden north porch. It showcases geometrical tracery, particularly in the east window, which has alternating wide and narrow lights. Inside, the church is richly furnished and contains monuments from the former church, including one by the sculptor Chantrey. Notable features include a pulpit dated 1637, stalls, reliefs, paintings attributed to Gessi, and a cusped arch leading to the organ chamber.
