Description
The walls surrounding and to the west and south-west of the Parish Church of St James, along with the gatepiers and gates to the west of the church, date from the mid-18th century and are made of red brick. These walls, which were originally part of the former North Cray Place, are notably pierced along North Cray Road. A prominent feature is the fine gateway located immediately west of the church, which has piers topped with stone pineapples. The wrought-iron gates, which include an overthrow, once displayed the initials H.H., but these have now been replaced by a cross. The gates were constructed by William Burcke for the Hetherington family.
