Description
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Grade II* listed building located on Manor Road in Bexley. The church features a nave with a north aisle and chapel, a chancel, a west tower, and a south porch. It largely dates from the 13th century but incorporates some older elements and was restored between 1882 and 1883 by the architect Basil Champneys. The structure is built of flint with Portland stone dressings and includes lancet windows and intersecting tracery, much of which has been restored. A distinctive feature is the unusual shingled spire, which consists of two storeys; the lower square section has bell openings designed as dormers, while the upper section is octagonal and overhanging. Inside, the church contains sedilia that are probably from the 15th century, a font dated 1684 on a medieval stem, and a chancel screen with a loft that includes stalls and a pulpit designed by Champneys. There are also many fine monuments from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The churchyard features a notable collection of tomb chests and stones dating from the 17th century onwards.
