Description
The coal duty boundary marker, located on the south side of Number 1 Dartford Road, was erected in 1861 or shortly thereafter. It was cast by Henry Grissell at the Regents Canal Ironworks on Eagle Wharf Road in Hoxton. This post was established under the London Coal and Wine Duties (Continuance) Act 1861 and is a standard "City Post." It features a square cast iron design with chamfered edges, a projecting cornice, and a frieze that displays the arms of the City of London on one side. The stem of the post has a plate inscribed with "ACT/24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42."
