Description

This is a former school with an attached former schoolmaster's house, built in 1879. The building was constructed for Foster's Educational Trust, which had been established in 1727 following a bequest by William Foster to provide education for 20 poor children. It is built of brown brick with red brick dressings, some pointed tiles to the gables, and a renewed tiled roof with ridge tiles. The building has an L-shaped plan, comprising the school to the left and the former schoolmaster's house to the right.

The school section is a single storey with attics and features a prominent octagonal tiled spire with wooden louvres and a cast-iron finial. There is a projecting gable to the left with wooden bargeboards, a pendant, and two tall windows, together with a lean-to with an arched doorcase. Dormers feature stepped mullioned windows, and the ground floor has three mullioned and transomed casements. A gabled porch is followed by a projecting gable with a three-tier, five-light casement. The two-storey former schoolmaster’s house to the right consists of two parallel ranges and two storeys, with chequer-work framing and pebbledashed infill to the gable. It includes a three-light sash window to the first floor, a four-light canted bay to the ground floor, and a gabled wooden porch with bargeboard, finial, and pendant.

The north-east side of the building has four mullioned and transomed windows; the roof incorporates courses of alternating plain and patterned tiles. The rear elevation includes end projecting gables with hipped hoists and a flat-roofed dormer to the central section, along with a later flat-roofed addition in matching style and materials. The interior has not been inspected.
