Description

Clere House is a house dating from 1914, designed by Barry Parker from the Parker and Unwin office. It is located in the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The house is constructed of brick in mixed bonds, with randomly placed tile insets, tile dressings, and a half-hipped tile roof with boxed eaves. It is a single-storey building with dormers. The building has a broad, V-shaped plan. The central range features an entrance set within a segmental-arched and recessed porch, with a plank door of an original design. The windows have brick mullions, dividing them into two-, three- and five-light sections, with leaded light casements. The house includes a pair of axial ridge stacks with blind recesses to the entrance block, and a single axial stack to the left-hand wing. A single-storey garage to the right is a later addition. It is believed that Parker designed the house for his own use, though he never lived there. The design demonstrates a skillful adaptation to the irregular corner site. The house’s materials and finishes are of high quality, consistent with the best work by Parker and Unwin in the Suburb.
