Description

Gates House is a house designed in 1915 by T. Laurence Dale and altered in 1930 by T. S. Tait of the notable firm Burnet, Tait and Lorne. The building is constructed of brick in English bond and features a high hipped roof covered with tiles and boxed eaves. It is two storeys tall with a four-window range that is nearly symmetrical around the entrance. The entrance porch is supported by metal ties, and above it is a stone panel carved in low relief, which includes the inscription: 'Hark Hark to the Lark as Heavens Gate Sings/ Gates House 1915', with a sword at the center of the panel surrounded by flowers.

The design of the house adapts to the site, with the fourth window range set at a slightly lower level. There is a lateral stack on the left side and a hipped dormer in the center. An axial stack is located on the rear slope, just to the right of the center line. A notable feature on the right side is a three-storey rectangular bay that helps transition from Hampstead Way to Wyldes Close. This bay rises above the eaves line and culminates in a hipped clerestory lookout, along with a first-floor balcony that has a wooden railing.

The rear elevation has been altered by Tait and is of intrinsic architectural interest. Originally, it featured a full-height, shallow canted bay that ended in a parapet above the eaves. Tait added cubic, flat-roofed, single-storey extensions on either side, which sensitively complement the original design and create a distinctive effect typical of interwar architecture. Additionally, there is a low relief panel on the side of the Tait extension depicting children engaged in building activities. The doors and windows maintain authentic designs.
