Description

The Physic Well is a timber-framed structure with a cruciform cover, built around 1937. It features herringbone brick and plaster panels. The spring was discovered around 1650. Beneath the well house is the original 17th-century barrel-vaulted brick well chamber, which has a brick floor and two shallow pools, along with associated pipework. The well was visited by Samuel Pepys on at least two occasions in 1664 and 1667 and became a popular meeting place for Londoners seeking the medicinal benefits of the mineral waters.
