Description
The Convent of St Mary at the Cross, begun around 1874 and completed with the Chapel around 1893, features various late additions and was designed by James Brooks. This large, asymmetrical convent building, constructed in the late 19th century, is aligned on a north-south axis, with the Chapel located at the north end of the complex. Designed in a Gothic Revival style, the building has two storeys with attics, faced in red brick and accented with stone banding. The windows are traceried and made of stone, while the roofs are hipped and gabled, tiled, and set at varying levels according to the architectural elements. The Chapel, as originally built, consists of one aisle of a much larger intended design.
