Description
The Edgware War Memorial, built in 1920 by an unknown mason, features a Celtic cross made of hammer-dressed grey Cornish granite. It stands on a three-stage base, surrounded by nine granite dwarf posts. The north and south faces of the base display lists of Edgware's First World War casualties, organized by year. The foot of the cross is inscribed on the north and south sides with the words 'FOR REMEMBRANCE' and 'Let us here highly resolve that these heroic dead shall not have died in vain.' The east side of the base bears the inscription 'Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for a friend,' while the west side is inscribed with 'He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.' The memorial was unveiled on 27 March 1920 and commemorates the 55 men from Edgware who died in the Great War of 1914-1919.
