Description
This building is a former house that is now part of St Antony's School. It dates from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure is timber framed with an 18th-century brick front and features a plain tiled roof that is hipped on the front range and steeply pitched on the north-west wing. Originally, the house was 'L' shaped, but a mid-19th-century wing has been added to the north-east. The entrance hall was created in the 19th century, replacing the former lobby entry plan.
The building has two storeys, a cellar, and a roof storey. The 18th-century brick front has three square-headed sashed windows with ungauged heads and plate glass. The entrance is square-headed and includes a rectangular, plain fanlight. There is a 19th-century lean-to porch supported by trellis and covered with a slate roof. The roof features two square-headed casemented dormers. Inside, the corner posts of the timber frame and wall plates are visible, although much of the structure is covered. The mid-19th-century staircase leads to an upper floor that has a moulded early 17th-century door with wrought iron hinges. The north-west wing retains its original roof, and the cellar has original floor joists along with 18th-century timber storage compartments. This building is a rare survival in the London area. Later school buildings to the north, east, and west are not of special interest.
