Description

Houses, designed by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin around 1912-1913, built in a style reminiscent of Edwin Lutyens. Constructed from brick and stone, the facades feature chequered patterns of brick and stone on the first floor of pedimented, projecting ranges. The roofs are hipped and tiled. The houses are arranged on a U-shaped plan, intended to mirror the nearby block at numbers 103-115 (odd) and 101 and 117. The courtyards were designed to create the visual impression of Georgian almshouses. The houses at the ends of the row, facing Corringham Road, and the central rear of the courtyard have projecting bays with segmental or triangular pediments, incorporating stone and brick chequers. All the windows are sash windows in a Georgian style with authentic designs, displaying variations in size and arrangement. There are subtle changes in detail between the two groups, with some having round-arched entrances and others featuring overlights with decorative glazing. The design subtly transitions from a vernacular influence to Georgian formality, creating an exceptionally handsome and coherent streetscape along Corringham Road and Corringway.
