Description

These are a group of houses at 5-17 Corringway, Hampstead Garden Suburb, built in 1911 by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. They are constructed of red brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with red brick dressings around the openings and corners. The roofs are tiled, with swept, boxed eaves. The houses are two storeys high, with a hipped dormer at the rear of number 8.

The arrangement is an eight-window range for numbers 5, 7 and 9, with projecting rectangular bays. Numbers 11 to 17 have a nine-window range, again with projecting bays. The corner bay turns at an oblique angle to the cul-de-sac. All windows are flat arched with original sash design, except for a filled-in window on the first floor in the corner bay of number 8, which is now plate glass. A narrow valley is formed where the hipped roofs meet at the corner turn.

The entrances are flat arched, except for the entrance to number 5, which has an outshut to the rear. The entrances to numbers 7 and 9 are recessed within round-arched porches, with a ground-floor canted bay situated between them. Remaining entrances are set under round relieving arches. Ground-floor canted bays are present in ranges 2, 4, and 6 of the central block containing numbers 11-17. Axial ridge stacks are present on this block, with heavier stacks flanking the corner. There are also stacks between numbers 5, 7, and 9. The doors are of original design.

The houses form part of an important group of buildings designed by Parker and Unwin, which includes 1 and 3, 2 and 4, 6-18 (even; a mirror image of this group) Corringway, and numbers 62-76 (even) Corringham Road. Stylistic notes can be found in the listing description for numbers 1 and 3 Corringway.
