Description
The war memorial, designed by Frank E Whiting, was built in 1920 and is located on The Ridgeway in Mill Hill. It is made of Portland stone and features bronze embellishments. The memorial has a symmetrical, battered pylon with an enriched raised panel on each face, topped with a bronze wreath. The roadside panel includes an inset bronze sword, and the entire structure is surmounted by a bronze urn.
The pylon is set on a tall base above a shallow plinth, which displays a roadside bronze panel inscribed with the names of those who fell in World War I, along with the inscription: "In proud and thankful remembrance of men from Mill Hill, who died that the nations might henceforth live in freedom, righteousness and peace. They were a wall unto us both by night and by day." The reverse side features a bronze panel commemorating the fallen of World War II.
The memorial was unveiled on 14th November 1920, and its design was judged and approved by the notable architect Gilbert Scott. It is a distinguished example of a neoclassical memorial with impressive bronze details.
