Description
The Church of St John, located on Algernon Road in Hendon, was designed by Temple Moore in 1895 but remains unfinished. It is built of plain brick in a decorated or perpendicular style, featuring stone dressings. The church includes only the nave and south aisle. Inside, there is a simple five-bay layout with some 17th-century fittings. Notable features include a pulpit from around 1760, originally from St Michael Bassishaw, and a reredos from the City Church of St George, Botolph Lane, which was moved to St John’s in 1909. Both the font and reredos are designed in the manner of Sir Christopher Wren. Additionally, there is 17th-century panelling in the parish room that came from Little Moorfields. The original drawings by Temple Moore are still held by the church, which would have been a remarkable building if completed as originally planned.
