Description

A group of four houses located in the Hampstead Garden Suburb, built between 1910 and 1911 by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. The houses are designed as a double-ended hall house and are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with tile weatherings and weatherboarding to the ends of the eaves. The roofs are tiled, with two-span facing gable roofs to each cross wing and half dormers.

The houses are bilaterally symmetrical around a central range of three round-arched openings, the middle of which serves as a cross passage, with recessed entrance porches to either side. Each cross wing incorporates two windows, positioned one window range from the ends of the block. A pair of hipped half dormers flank the central range, featuring unusual long casements on the exterior, each flanked by smaller rectangular lights, creating a tripartite arrangement characteristic of Parker and Unwin’s work in the Suburb. The entrances to numbers 81 and 87 are located in the outer ranges, within round-arched porches similar to those flanking the cross passage, with the arches turned in tile. A ridge stack runs parallel to the roof line along the central axis, while axial ridge stacks are present along the party walls between numbers 81 and 83, bisecting each cross wing. Axial external stacks are situated at the rear corners of each return. The original design of the doors and casements has been retained. The group of houses forms part of a series of notable Parker and Unwin designs along Corringham Road and Corringway.
