Description
A pair of houses located in the Hampstead Suburb Garden Village, built around 1912 to the designs of Matthew Dawson. The houses are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with tile hanging, cement and brick dressings, and pantiles to the roof of the central section, with plain tiles elsewhere. They exhibit bilateral symmetry, mirroring the design of numbers 40 and 42 Meadway, also by Dawson.
The houses are one and two storeys high, with projecting cross wings. The central section has a single-storey height and features two levels of roof dormers. The entrances are set within a segmental-arched arcade, with tympana above the doors decorated with cement combed into a wave pattern, reflecting the pantile roofline above. A parapet incorporating a lead gutter is a particularly noteworthy feature. Dormers are positioned outside the entrance range axes. The crosswing of number 36 has a one-window range and a hipped roof with a brick dentil cornice. The crosswing of number 38 has a facing gable with a stucco-faced gable head and a tile lintel to the first-floor window, creating the impression of an oversailing head.
The motor house of number 36 is of an authentic design, with an opening flanked by brick piers topped with gablets formed from tiles, alongside a dormer to the roof return. There's evidence of an original wood pergola linking this pair of houses with numbers 40 and 42; the pergola has been partly demolished. Dawson's work in the Suburb represents an exceptional design, adapting Parker and Unwin details to create novel effects, transforming the Vernacular Revival style into a vehicle for personal expression.
